The three theological letters (epistles) of John are commonly called 1 John, 2 John and 3 John. They were written by Christians living quite a while after the Gospel of John was written, by a different author, and they use arguments and terminology that developed as a result of that Gospel (which was itself written a long time after the rest of the canonical gospels), and address theological problems which arose during their own community's time₁. No early Christians quote from these epistles, and, later on, most who heard of them were dubious about their authenticity. Nonetheless, rising Pauline Christians found these letters very useful in arguing their case, and when the official New Testament was established in the later half of the 4th century, they had the 3 epistles of John included in the canon.

²	Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.	beloved, concerning all things I desire thee to prosper, and to be in health, even as thy soul doth prosper,
³	For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.	for I rejoiced exceedingly, brethren coming and testifying of the truth in thee, even as thou in truth dost walk;
⁴	I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.	greater than these things I have no joy, that I may hear of my children in truth walking.
⁵	Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;	Beloved, faithfully dost thou do whatever thou mayest work to the brethren and to the strangers,
⁶	Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:	who did testify of thy love before an assembly, whom thou wilt do well, having sent forward worthily of God,
⁷	Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.	because for `His' name they went forth, nothing receiving from the nations;
⁸	We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.	we, then, ought to receive such, that fellow-workers we may become to the truth.
⁹	I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.	I did write to the assembly, but he who is loving the first place among them -- Diotrephes -- doth not receive us;
¹⁰	Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.	because of this, if I may come, I will cause him to remember his works that he doth, with evil words prating against us; and not content with these, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and those intending he doth forbid, and out of the assembly he doth cast.
¹¹	Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.	Beloved, be not thou following that which is evil, but that which is good; he who is doing good, of God he is, and he who is doing evil hath not seen God;
¹²	Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.	to Demetrius testimony hath been given by all, and by the truth itself, and we also -- we do testify, and ye have known that our testimony is true.
¹³	I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:	Many things I had to write, but I do not wish through ink and pen to write to thee,
